Punyamurtula Kishore Wikipedia   Punyamurtula S. Kishore is the founder of Preventive Medicine Associates, Addiction Medicine Associates, and National Library of Addiction. Kishore has been a practicing public health scientist for over 30 years.  He began his medical career as a primary care / family practice physician and then moved into a position as the Medical Director of the Washingtonian Center for Addictions, the first organization in the U.S. to recognize addiction as a disease. Their philosophy was an early precursor to the AA or 12-step program movement.  Kishore has been a member of the American Society of Addiction Medicine since 1986 and has helped treat more than 200,000 addicts. Dr. Kishore treats addicts with his ‘sobriety maintenance’ method.  This unique health model stresses the prescription of non-toxic substances, provides patients with coping skills they need to remain sober and tailors treatment to specific medical conditions. Kishore also administers “de-addiction” treatment, a process that treats emotional addiction as well as the physical addiction.  Patients have access to home detoxification, an inexpensive and more effective option to in-patient care which allows them to maintain their dignity while learning how to cope with the temptations found in their own environments. In 1993, Kishore founded National Library of Addictions in Brookline, Massachusetts.  To support work in addictions treatment, the Library is designed to provide a non-profit structure for addiction professionals to exchanges ideas and to further the development of treatment methodologies. He was honored by the Boston Celtics with a “Heroes Among Us” award, given to those who make a significant impact on the lives of others.  Kishore is also the recipient of a national Compassionate Caregiver Award, Honorable Mention, from the Schwartz Foundation. Kishore served as a faculty member of Harvard and as an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Massachusetts.  Currently, he serves as the Assistant Professor of Business Administration at Fitchburg State University.  He holds his Master’s Degree in Public Health from Harvard School of Public Health, in addition to Certificates in Addiction Studies and Forensic Psychology from Bridgewater State University.

PUNYAMURTULA KISHORE WIKIPEDIA    His office resembled doctors' offices from the 1980s and 1990s with its wood paneled walls, earth tones and location inside a residential house, that could easily be mistaken for a private home if it weren't for the sign in front. The office is located steps away from what he called "the drug capital of Boston," referring to Oak Square, and said out of his many locations in the commonwealth, this one has the steadiest demand for his services. For a doctor who began his career with a concentration in tropical diseases, he has found himself in a very untropical-like locale for most of his career. This India native has spent most of his time around the greater Boston area, and is known as a maverick in the medical would for his methods of sobriety maintenance dealing with opiate addiction. He started offering his methods in Cape Cod, where he made house calls and eventually started opening up practices around the commonwealth.   Kishore is the founder of the National Library of Addictions in Brookline, which was the first of its kind. The library is a research and lecture center, where he personally maintains the collection.   Like any good doctor, Kishore likes to provide a diagram to explain what he's talking about. Casually picking up a pencil in front of him, he scribbled a picture of a bicycle wheel to describe what happens to a heroin addict during withdrawal. On the wheel, heroin or any other opiate, acts as an "artificial hub," and the spokes represent the means to think, move or just to feel, he said.   His point was that if you take away the hub, the spokes have no connection center, at which an addict loses their ability to do life's most basic functions. This is what happens during withdrawal, and it is likely the time when they call Kishore to repair the wheel.   "You can't breathe, your skin is crawling, you feel scared like you're going to die," he said describing withdrawal. During this time, an addict loses control of their bodily functions and are in a constant state of paranoia. The only relevant thing on their mind is to make it all stop.   Don't expect this doctor to whip out his prescription pad to quickly relive the symptoms. Methadone is commonly prescribed for the first few weeks during the treatment of heroin addiction, but you won't get any from this doctor. This is one addiction specialist who will never provide an addict with one quick fix for another.   "They want the magic bullet [solution]," he said. Not a bullet, but Kishore does provide his patients with nontoxic substances for elimination of pain, as well as coping and counseling skills. Kishore knows that it's a long road to recovery for most addicts days in most cases - where most end up slipping up during the course.   "Here, honesty prevails. My patients call me and say, 'Doctor I goofed up and I want to get back,' " Kishore said.   At the core of his philosophy, Kishore wants his patients to be able to realistically cope with the temptations found in their surroundings which is why most of the detox process occurs at their own home.   "We counsel, teach, and our goal is to repair the family fabric...I reach out; as a doctor, I have a lot of powers," he said.   Kishore said opiate addiction is just like any other disease that needs treatment and you'll find him comparing it to diabetes often. Why? Just like diabetes, a person has to live with an addiction for the rest of their lives, Kishore said, and they have to make lifelong changes to their diet and lifestyle to live with it.   "It's not easy, but we lead them back to life."
